Instructor of the Month! November 2014!

Michaela Ison has been a member of our Continuing Education family since January 2014 and is an amazing instructor! She is the instructor for our Pharmacy Technician Program.
We asked Michaela a few quick questions to get to know her better:

What is your favorite part about teaching? My favorite part of teaching is when I see a student have that "a-ha" moment. That is when I truly feel fulfilled as an instructor.

If someone were to describe you in one word, what would it be? Determined. I am more than willing to go the extra mile for my students. I always let them know I am here to see them succeed and will put in the extra hours needed to see that to fruition.

What’s your #1 most played song? "Sitting on the dock of the bay" by Otis Redding performed by Smith & Meyers.

What is your favorite form of exercise? I love yoga or gardening.

What’s your current favorite TV show/Movie? I cannot get enough of Sons of Anarchy. It always keeps me on the edge of my seat!

What is something you learned in the last week? I have learned that a good teaching method is videos. The students always seem to absorb more information and they seem to engage in much more meaningful discussions.

When you have 30 minutes of free-time, how do you pass the time? Sad but true…I take PTCB practice tests. I love a challenge

Where would you go for your dream vacation? I would go to Greece. I love Greek mythology.

What advice do you have for new instructors of Continuing Education? Patience is a virtue. Always take time to get to know your students. Showing an interest in someone may be all they have that makes their day!

The Training Advantage

More and more companies are beginning to understand the connection between training and the bottom line. Successful companies invest in training to improve performance and cut down on job turnover. According to Training Daily Advisor, “job skills training was the number one training need identified by participants in a recent survey followed by leadership and supervisory training.” The survey also indicated that companies plan significant increases in their 2015 training budgets. You may be thinking that the only companies that invest in training are the large, well-financed organizations; but, there is another option for small business owners.

Most small businesses don’t have the budget to staff a training department. But, hiring an internal training staff isn't the only way to get your employees the skills they need to help your organization be successful. In Texas, you can take advantage of the Skills for Small Business (SSB) Grant which is available for businesses employing two to 99 full-time employees by filling out a simple, online application. Training dollars ranging from $725 to $1450 can be used at Central Texas College to get the valuable skills your employees need to help your company excel.

To date, Central Texas College Continuing Education (CTCCE) has provided local small business owners with over $40,000 in training. CTCCE offers a wide range of technical and soft skills courses that meet the needs of small business. We can also develop training specifically with your company in mind and offer it at your location or ours. Take a look at our course schedule or contact Teresa Chavez at 254-526-1586 to find out how to get the valuable training your company needs.

Instructor of the Month! October 2014!

Robert O'Dell has been a member of our Continuing Education family since May 2014 and is an amazing instructor! He is the instructor for our Clinical Medical Assistant.

We asked Robert a few quick questions to get to know him better:

What is your favorite part about teaching? When the students say "Thank you for everything, I have learned a lot in your class," makes all of the preparation worth it!

If someone were to describe you in one word, what would it be? Depends on who that someone is; I’ve been described from one spectrum to the other, however for this I’ll say "professional."

What’s your #1 most played song? Hotel California, by Eagles

What is your favorite form of exercise? Walking

What’s your current favorite TV show/Movie? NCIS/Wild Hogs

What is something you learned in the last week? Patience

When you have 30 minutes of free-time, how do you pass the time? Celebrating thirty minutes of free-time! Really……….usually look at my note pad and mark off items completed and then add more to be done (never-ending to-do-list).

Where would you go for your dream vacation?  A balcony suite on an Alaskan Cruise.

What advice do you have for new instructors of Continuing Education?  Upfront; go over all of the expectations of the program, then stick to them, periodically reinforce the expectations, be consistent, and professional. Prepare for class, make it interesting and throw in some fun now and then.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose? Superman

What advice do you have for new instructors of Continuing Education? There is no way to know if you are going to teach everything you want in a class period. Plan ahead and fill up some time with practice assignments for the students.
